On this private excursion, we will explore the protected areas of Ludo and Quinta do Lago.
These two areas are extraordinary sites for birdwatching, in fact they are some of the best birding spots in the Algarve. Put on your birding hat and have fun exploring.
This area is a birdwatchers paradise and your experienced local guide will show you the great diversity of birds and make the most of your time spent in this beautiful protected Algarve forest. It is made of a mosaic of pines, salt flats, farmland, marshes and freshwater ponds.
Some of the local species are the Little Bittern, the Purple Swamphen, the Red-crested Pochard and the exotic Black-headed Weaver. These species can be observed in the reedy pool at the edge of freshwater ponds. Autumn is marked by several migratory passiflores, including Melodious and Willow Warblers, Tawny Pipit and Bluethroat. Reed beds are important for various species of nesting waterbirds and also for a large number of migratory passiflores during the fall and spring migration. Throughout the year, species such as Spoonbill, Black-winged Stilt, Avocet and Kentish Plover can be observed. Other breeders include Pratincole Collar, Big Spotted Cuckoo, Yellow Wagtail, Woodchat Shrike and Beach nesting tern. Winter is quite interesting mainly due to the huge concentration of waders and ducks that reside here. The Caspian Tern, Osprey, Black-shouldered Kite, Marsh Harrier and Booted Eagle are other regular visitors during the colder period of the year. Reasonable numbers observations of the Greater Flamingo are common throughout the year and excellent views of the sociable Azure-winged Magpie, the hard-to-lose Hoopoe and the beautiful Sardinian Warbler are some of the other highlights.
